Observation Narrative
Plot is located in the middle portion of the Mattaponi River floodplain in a swale/ slough connecting a backswamp to the main river channel ca. 60 m north of the plot. The vegetation is a young, Acer rubrum-dominated, seasonally flooded forest with hummock-and-hollow microtopography. Mucky depressions are dominated by colonies of Peltandra virginica and Saururus cernuus. The cover of American beech (Fagus grandifolia) in the plot is contributed by an overhanging tree rooted on a well-drained hummock.
